In this year of turmoil, many of us are spending more time than ever in front of computers, TVs…all manner of devices to help us get through these crazy times.  Poor posture for long periods, along with stress…bad combo.
But maybe this neck and shoulder pain is not that different from your “usual”.
Maybe your work requires long hours in front of a computer.  Or you do physical work that kicks your butt. Maybe you’re just really into sports but keep getting injured, to the point where your neck and shoulders “seize up” every time you try to get back to it.
You might have a yoga or pilates routine, but the stretching and the straining that used to feel good, now actually makes things worse.  Maybe you’ve done PT in the past, but the tension persists and you still get headaches.
Massage seems to help, but it’s expensive so you wait until things are really bad.  And seemingly in no time, your shoulders are crawling up your neck again!
What’s going on?
Unconscious holding patterns.

Sitting in front of a computer, we tend to hunch and jam our heads forward.  And there’s “text neck”, from constantly looking down at your phone. Maybe you’ve had surgery or worked out too hard.
To make any and all holding patterns worse, and even more unconscious…  just add stress.

Because these holding patterns are coded in the nerves which direct the muscles, massage can only ever be temporary relief.
PT and stretching can actually make things worse because we’re working against the holding pattern… against ourselves.  That habit persists because it’s doing a job.  Until we find another way to get that job done, the pattern will keep on.
What to do?

What’s needed is a way to unwind the holding pattern itself.
And the wonderful news is, there’s an easy and blissful way to do this, and our brains are naturally hardwired for it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How did you come to be teaching this?

I was a professional chef for many years.  The nature of the work is stressful and back-breaking.  You can’t just stop when you get tired…the show must go on!  So I learned to work through pain and exhaustion, until injuries finally put a stop to all of it.  So this grew out of my own healing journey.
My recovery was long and arduous.  It wasn’t until I started doing Feldenkrais that I was able to decode the holding patterns that had led to my injuries.  I was able to resolve my neck, shoulder, and joint pain, and started getting my groove back.  It had such an impact on my feelings of confidence, safety, and overall ability to take care of myself that I was moved to go through the professional training so I could bring more of it into the world.

How does this work?

Most of these movement explorations are done lying down.  A carpeted area on the floor, with enough room to do a “snow angel” is ideal.  If it’s too difficult to get up and down from the floor, you may also do them on a bed.
Either way, you’ll stand up feeling as though your feet are fully planted, while your neck and shoulders feel light and free.

Do I need any special equipment?

No special equipment.  You may want extra padding, a small pad, or rolled-up towel to support your head.

How should I prepare?

Sessions last about one hour.  You’ll want that time to be quiet and free of distractions.  It’s good to wear something comfy, cozy, and easy to move in.  You may want to have layers handy so you don’t get cold.

When are the sessions offered?

We meet Mondays and Wednesdays at 3 pm Pacific Time.  But don’t worry if you can’t make it live every time.  A replay is available to all participants, so you can do the session at your convenience.

I’m so glad I took this course!  It’s not just cause of the pain relief, either. . . though that has been amazing.  It’s that I have more control. . . like I don’t have to go have someone ‘fix’ me all the time.”
